Who is Nanny Katie?

I’m Katie! live in Lynnwood, WA with my husband, Kyle, our two golden retrievers, Hank and Odin. I also have two incredible teenagers who I have the deep honor of calling both my biological siblings and my adoptive children. While I’ve had custody for over five years, we officially became a legal family in February 2024! Being a big sister and a sister-parent have fundamentally shaped everything about how I view family, connection, and what children truly need to thrive.

In addition to my nanny work, I’ve spent the last five years working with a national organization focused on transforming child welfare policy. We fight to ensure that children involved in state systems are placed with relatives or trusted adults instead of institutions, group homes, or strangers. Before that, I worked with a nonprofit supporting families impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorder, and I continue to bring that experience and compassion into my practice of care, especially when working with neurodivergent children.

I also volunteer with causes close to my heart, including Food Lifeline, which works to end hunger in our region, and Sibling Strong and Kindred Matters, nonprofits committed to reuniting siblings separated by foster care and family policing systems. Advocacy and community engagement aren’t side projects for me, they’re part of who I am.

Outside of work and volunteering, you’ll usually find me behind a camera lens, hiking in the mountains, forcing my family to do some old fashioned camping, working out, reading with my book club, or learning something new just for the joy of it. I’m a naturally curious person and a lifelong learner - qualities that show up every day in how I approach my work with children.

I love laughing, building community, movies, a good bagel sandwich, finding cool things in nature, taking my dogs to the beach, and best of all, spending time with my family.

Above all, I believe in creating homes full of patience, play, laughter, and love — and I feel honored every time a family welcomes me into theirs.

I hope we get the opportunity to get to know one another even more!

Warmly,

Katie Laughlin

My Philosophy and Approach

II approach caregiving with a mix of heart, training, and deep respect for every child’s individual path. Here’s what guides my work:

🧸 Children deserve love, patience, and space to explore. I create calm, supportive environments where curiosity is encouraged and emotions are honored.

🤝 Connection comes first. I build trust with both children and parents through gentle, responsive care and consistent routines.

🌈 Kindness and curiosity lead the way. These are the foundations of how I engage, problem-solve, and navigate big feelings.

🪁 I honor autonomy — even in the tiniest humans. Whether it’s letting a toddler choose our adventure or respecting a baby’s cues, I believe in giving children agency in safe, age-appropriate ways.

😴 I rarely wake a sleeping baby. Quality sleep is essential for healthy brain development, immune support, and emotional regulation. I follow evidence-based sleep practices and prioritize each baby’s natural rhythms. In rare, specific situations a gentle wake may be needed - but otherwise, sleep is sacred. (Toddlers, of course, follow a different rhythm!)

📣 Open communication is non-negotiable. I believe in clear, honest, and thoughtful communication with parents. I tend to over-communicate at times — but I’d always rather be on the same page.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 I support all kinds of families and parenting styles. From attachment parenting to structured routines, I meet families where they are and adapt with care and flexibility.

🎨 Play is powerful. I weave learning, movement, and emotional development into everyday moments through storytime, sensory play, dance parties, and outdoor adventures — rain or shine.

A Note on Fit & Philosophy

I approach caregiving through connection, patience, and respect for children as whole people. I believe in guiding behavior with empathy, setting age-appropriate boundaries, and helping kids understand the “why” behind what we do.

Because of that, I would not be the right fit for families who use discipline methods rooted in fear, shame, or physical punishment. I don’t support spanking, forced compliance without explanation, or withholding affection as a form of correction.

Instead, I use positive guidance, natural consequences, and open communication to help children grow into emotionally intelligent, confident humans — and I love partnering with families who share (or are open to) that approach.

If you're unsure or your style is still evolving, that’s totally okay! I’m happy to talk more and see if we’re a good match. And if you are a parent that currently utilizes strict authoritative parenting but want help moving into a new approach, I would be thrilled to support that journey!
